FoRR
Muraho!
Friends of Rwandan Rugby (FoRR), is a newly established charity that supports school and community participation in rugby, to promote reconciliation and encourage a healthy and active lifestyle amongst the Rwandan people.
FoRR has been actively coaching and supporting rugby in Rwanda Since April 2007. After preliminary work in 2001-2003 and a month in 2004 the charity now has long-term volunteers capable of developing the game in schools and communities around the country.
The Project
Currently, FoRR is working with a combination of orphanages, street kids’ centers, vocational training centers and schools. The equipment levels are being continually improved and the vast sums of donated kit received helps teams to train and has made possible 4 separate tournaments involving a total of 19 newly established teams. These tournaments effectively provide a stage for the competitive element that seems to exist amongst all participants. This competitiveness is evident in every activity from warm-up to warm down and it is a testament to FoRR that it is continually complemented on providing a place for the young people to express themselves.
Volunteer
FoRR is planning to orgaise a tour of rugby coaches during the spring 2008 and is currently looking for interested people wishing to visit the country and volunteer their passion and knowledge to develop the game. Coaching capacity was given a massive boost due to volunteer work in 2007 which helped develop young players with zero knowledge into physical teams playing a fast free flowing style of rugby. By introducing them to the sport, the youngsters now feel part of a team and are given the chance to shine.
“If you have a month, or even two weeks to spare I could not think of a more memorable and rewarding way to spend your time” Kate Alback ,July 2007
“I have been playing rugby now for 9 years, I have been coaching for the last 3, and in my combined years I have yet to witness the passion and desire to play rugby as I did in Rwanda. The boys have such a passion to learn as much of the game as they can. With a little demonstration the players pick it up very quickly. I believe that FoRR are making a huge difference in the lives of these young men"
