What we do
Our aim is to develop grassroots rugby in Rwanda by providing the facilities and equipment necessary for playing the game, and to educate local coaches. The promotion of the sport will be a tool for reconciliation and to improve social welfare. We believe sport has the ability to change attitudes, challenge prejudices and foster collaboration and respect for both team-mates and opponents. We are particularly keen to focus on grassroots rugby in schools and rural areas for boys and girls.
To date, FoRR has worked with a combination of orphanages, street kids’ centres, vocational training centres and schools. The charity is also a driving force in the development of the prospective Rwandan Schools Association of Rugby. Positive meetings with the Rwandan Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, and the Federation of Rwandan Rugby have allowed open access to communities of young people, providing coaches coming into the country a vast pool of talent to teach.
FoRR has done a lot to improve equipment levels, distributing balls, boots and playing strips through various sources. A vast amount of donated kit has been received through our volunteers and a number of UK rugby clubs including Wasps, Saracens, London Irish, London Welsh, Bristol University and OA Saints.
The future of FoRR is filled with limitless potential. At present there are plans to establish a rugby academy, develop a national ground and organise a tour of rugby coaches in spring 2008.
